Prepare to Facilitate the Eight-Week Journey
Begin here to prepare for facilitating the eight gatherings.
The Eight-Week Journey is designed so that the facilitator does not need to create or direct the contemplative experiences. Each prepared experience carries its prayer.
Your role is to prepare the setting, welcome participants, remain present, and accompany the reflection and sharing that surround each experience. Across eight weeks, you also help hold the continuity of the group.
This preparation will guide you step by step. Complete the journey-wide preparation first, then prepare each gathering with its own materials.
Begin with —
Step 1: Experience You Are Loved
Before facilitating the journey for others, experience the first week yourself as a participant.
Do not study it or evaluate how you might lead it. Simply receive the experience as it is offered.
When you have finished, return here and continue to Step 2.
Step 2: Understand Your Role
You are not responsible for creating the contemplative experiences or making something happen for the participants.
Your role is to:
prepare a hospitable setting for each gathering
welcome participants and offer the needed orientation
begin that week’s prepared experience
remain present while it unfolds
protect the silence without adding commentary
accompany the reflection and sharing that follows
help the group return from week to week
The prepared experience carries the interior contemplative movement. You carry the people, the room, and the transitions around it.
Step 3: Read the Facilitator’s Guide
The Facilitator’s Guide offers the formation and practical guidance you need to accompany a Creating Space gathering.
Read it before beginning the Eight-Week Journey. You do not need to memorize it, but become familiar with its guidance on hospitality, silence, reflection, sharing, and the facilitator’s boundaries.
Step 4: Prepare the Eight Gatherings
Arrange a time and place for all eight gatherings. Plan for a consistent room, enough time for the prepared experience and the reflection that follows, and a simple way to communicate with participants between weeks.
If someone else will host, agree on who will prepare the room, provide participant materials, and check the recording before each gathering. The host handles these practical arrangements; you remain responsible for accompanying the people and guiding the gathering.
Before inviting participants, confirm that you have the facilitator materials, participant materials, and gathering recording for all eight weeks.
Step 5: Prepare Each Week
Before each gathering, read that week’s facilitator materials from beginning to end. Identify the welcome, opening prayer, transition into the recording, reflection and sharing, and closing. Prepare the participant materials and confirm that you have the correct week’s gathering audio.
Start the prepared experience once and allow it to continue through its silences and ending. Do not pause it, time its silences, or speak over it.
Follow the gatherings in this order:
You Are Gift
You Are Not Alone
Learning to Notice
Learning to Trust
Learning to Receive
Learning to Remain
God Has Been Here All Along
Step 6: Check the Gathering Before Participants Arrive
For the first gathering, set out the participant materials and test the You Are Loved gathering recording on the equipment you will use. Check that it plays clearly from beginning to end and that the room allows people to listen without interruption.
Repeat the materials and playback check for each later week. If a host prepares these things, receive a clear handoff from the host before participants arrive.
When everything is ready, welcome the group and follow that week’s facilitator materials. Let the prepared experience carry the prayer.
Step 7: Confirm You Are Ready
Before inviting participants, confirm that you have the complete materials for all eight gatherings and know how you will access them each week.
Before each gathering, confirm that you have read that week’s facilitator materials, prepared its participant materials, tested its recording, and received the host’s handoff if someone else is hosting.
Prepare with care. Welcome with hospitality. Remain present. Let the prepared experience carry the prayer.
