What do we do with suffering we cannot fix?
Some suffering asks for action.
Some asks for endurance.
And some cannot be solved at all.
When we cannot change what is happening, the temptation may be to withdraw, explain, minimize, or rush toward hope before we are ready.
What does it mean to remain present when nothing can be fixed?
Things worth noticing
What kinds of suffering are hardest for you to remain near?
When do you feel the urge to make something better too quickly?
What happens when there is no answer to offer?
Who has stayed with you without trying to fix you?
What helps you remain compassionate without becoming overwhelmed?
Where might simple presence be enough for now?
A small experiment
The next time someone shares something painful, resist the urge to improve the moment.
Do not rush toward advice.
Do not search immediately for a hopeful interpretation.
Let silence remain for a little while.
Offer your presence before offering your solution.
Then notice what it is like simply to stay.
Not everything can be repaired.
Some things can only be accompanied.
