How do we live with others?

Much of life is lived in relationship.

We are shaped by the people we love, the people we struggle to understand, and the people whose lives are different from our own.

Living well with others requires more than agreement. It asks something of our attention, patience, honesty, and willingness to remain present.

What helps us stay human with one another?

Things worth noticing

  • When do you feel most able to listen without preparing your response?

  • What happens in you when someone sees the world differently?

  • Where do you tend to withdraw, defend, or become certain too quickly?

  • What helps you remain curious rather than reactive?

  • Which relationships make you more generous or more truthful?

  • Where might presence matter more than having the right answer?

A small experiment

Choose one conversation today and practice being fully present.

  • Let the other person finish.

  • Notice your urge to correct, explain, or defend.

  • Ask one more question before offering your own view.

  • Leave a little room for silence.

Then notice what changes.

We do not have to agree in order to remain present to one another.
